What is Car-Free MSP?

In honor of World Car-Free Day on September 22, 2024, Anoka County Commute Solutions, Commuter Services, Metro Transit, Move Minneapolis, and Move Minnesota are teaming up to promote opportunities, resources, and events to go car-free and connect to the community throughout the month of September.

2023 Campaign Results

1,194 people pledged to choose sustainable transportation for at least one trip instead of driving alone in September. Using an average round trip distance of 7 miles, the estimated impact of 1,194 pledges region-wide saves 8,023 pounds of carbon. That’s the equivalent of what 167 mature trees can absorb in one year!

The Minneapolis-St Paul region joined the world in celebrating World Car-Free Day on September 22nd by hosting a party in a park with over 100 community members arriving via sustainable transportation.

Community members from Minneapolis, Richfield, and Chaska took home sustainable transportation prizes for pledging.

World Car-Free Day aims to create awareness and educate communities about alternatives to driving alone. Launched in Spain in 1996, World Car-Free Day is observed in 1,500 cities and more than 40 countries.

Throughout September 2023, partner organizations promoted events and resources for individuals to learn about how to get around without driving alone and to experience car-free spaces in their communities.

Individuals pledged to try a car-free trip anytime September 1 - 30 and experienced the health, happiness, and community benefits that can result!
